Emerald is one of the most sought after gemstones, due to its intense green color. Its color results from the presence of the substances chromium and vanadium. The first emeralds were formed on earth about 3 billion years ago, and were widely used to make elaborate jewelry.

It is the stone of the month of May, while in America the emerald jewelry are the ideal gift for the 20th, 35th and especially for the 55th wedding anniversary of a couple.

Emerald belongs to the group of the mineral beryllium, while in terms of its hardness on the Mohs scale (scale for measuring the hardness of minerals) it gets a value between 7.5 and 8 (with a maximum value on the scale 10). Its value is mainly determined by its color. The more intense the color, the more expensive and valuable it is. Other determinants of its value are its cutting type, its clarity and its weight in carats. Its clarity depends on the inclusions contained in the gemstone. Gemologists describe the inclusions of the emerald as an inner jardin (ie garden in French), while the most common cutting of emeralds is the emerald cut, which is essentially a rectangular cut.
