The history of this piece of gold jewelry started in 326 AD, when St. Helena found the Holy Cross. She ordered to cut the cross in two and when the sacred shavings mingled with precious metals, the first Konstantinata were created . Konstantinata are golden coins of varied origin, that have the the Holy Cross as a main theme, pictured among the Great Constantine and his mother St. Helena. Perhaps the belief that the Konstantinato contains molecules of the Holy Cross, prompted people to give magical properties to the ornate Byzantine coin, like no other symbol of Greek folk traditions has ever had. Nowadays we offer a Konstantinato after the birth, or the christening of a child, but it can also be a gift to an adult, mostly as a talisman. The golden coins are now made with white, pink or yellow gold, in various sizes, with or without decorative stones, and are offered with a simple brooch. They can also be worn around the neck, usually with a golden chain.
