Diamond mining is considered to be, without a doubt, a noteworthy event for those who are font of precious stones. On April 4, 2019 in the city of Orapa, Botswana, the biggest blue diamond was mined and it was also the biggest diamond to be ever mined in this specific country.
According to CNNGReece, the initial hard stone of 41.1 carats that was processed through a thorough, precise and careful cut and polishing, now weighs 20.46 carats, rendering it a jewel of high quality and rareness. The color of this specific diamond is labeled by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as “FancyDeepBlue”, while the grade of its clarity, through 10x magnification scale, is VVS2, one of the highest categories within clarity classification. This means that diamond’s inclusions are extremely hard to be noticed by a specialist even under 10x magnification scale loupe. Its conventional Oval Shape Brilliant cut creates not only a sense of elegance and beauty comprising the glory of a round diamond, but also the beauty of a peculiar shape combined with high quality.
By the words of Marcus ter Haar, the Managing Director of the Okavango Diamond Company “It is incredibly unusual for a stone of this colour and nature to have come from Botswana – a once-in-lifetime find, which is about as rare as a star in the Milky Way”. The particular diamond is named “Blue Okavango”, from the Botswana River of the same name.
The diamond’s presentation took place in Gaborone city, the capital of Botswana, on April 17 2019 and it will be auctioned at the end of 2019. Considering the fact that in an auction that took place in Geneva in 2016, the “Oppenheimer Blue”, a diamond of 14.62 carats set in a ring, was sold for the extreme amount of 57.54 millions of Euros; it is plausible to comprehend that the specific blue diamond will attract the attention of gem collectors on an international level.
